All of the games – especially the final, were exciting. It see-sawed up until the last chukker. Jemalong was right up there all the way. Andrew Williams was consistently excellent and worked relentlessly. It could have gone either way but ultimately Sydney got the better of Jemalong to take home the prestigious Hector King Trophy.

Jan 28th, ‘07: New Bridge La Dolfina Wins Joe Barry Memorial Finals

Cambiaso, Magrini Lead New Bridge La Dolfina Over Pony Express 15-9 To Capture Joe Barry Memorial Cup Title Sunday at International Polo Club

WELLINGTON, FL (January 28, 2007) – In an unselfish display of a potent one-two punch, 10-goal superstar Adolfo Cambiaso and 9-goaler Matias Magrini scored all the goals as New Bridge La Dolfina defeated Pony Express 15-9 to capture the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup championship Sunday on Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

It was New Bridge La Dolfina’s 15th consecutive victory, including five in a row this season, improving its record to 17-1 over the last two seasons at International Polo Club.

Cambiaso, generally regarded as the best player in the world, scored a game-high eight goals and finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with 32 goals. Magrini scored seven goals and finished as the second-leading scorer with 30 goals.

“Joe Barry is a great name in U.S. polo history and to win this one is a real thrill,” said New Bridge La Dolfina patron Russ McCall. “I’m playing with two of the best players in the world (Cambiaso and Magrini) and that makes my job easier.”

Pony Express, which lost to New Bridge La Dolfina 16-9 on Opening Day, stayed closer through much of the game, trailing 8-7 at the end of the fourth chukker on Tomas Goti’s goal with 13 seconds remaining.
But that’s when Cambiaso took over.

“Until the fourth chukker, I couldn’t hit the ball. When I play well, the team plays better,” said Cambiaso. “It was on me, not on my teammates. In seven minutes (in the fifth chukker), I appeared.”
His inspired play forced Pony Express to foul and Magrini converted three penalty shots. Cambiaso added a magnificent goal with 54 seconds remaining, coming out of the throw-in, tapping the ball twice in the air, dribbled twice more on the ground and scoring from a sharp angle to make is 11-8.

“The fifth chukker killed us,” said Pony Express 8-goaler Nicolas Roldan. “(Cambiaso) got on Josie and we couldn’t catch him. Until the fifth, it could’ve gone both ways.”

Josie was named the Best Playing Pony and Cambiaso was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

“It was 10-8 and we missed a goal that would’ve cut it to 10-9 and they took the ball and went down and scored to make it 11-8,” said Roldan. “That hurt us.

“We got to the finals and we beat two big teams, Skeeterville and Audi, along the way. We’re happy to be in the finals.”

Goti led Pony Express (3-2) with five goals and finished with 29 for the tournament. Roldan scored two goals, patron Bob Daniels added one goal and Gonzalo Von Wernich did not score.

“He (Cambiaso) rises to the occasion,” said McCall. “He can do it by himself. The plan is for all three of us to block and he scores. If he gets in trouble he passes it to us. He has supreme confidence on the field. He’s one-of-a-kind.”
The Joe Barry Memorial Cup is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated polo in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.

The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased in advance and they are also available at the gate on the day of the game.

Cambiaso, Magrini Lead New Bridge La Dolfina over Pony Express 16-9 on Opening Day of 2007 season …

Superstar Adolfo Cambiaso and Matias Magrini continued their dominance at International Polo Club Palm Beach, leading New Bridge La Dolfina over Pony Ex press 16-9 on Opening Day of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup on Stanford Field on Sunday 14th. The 2007 season-opener drew a record Opening Day crowd of 6,349 spectators, with cars streaming in throughout the first half.
Cambiaso scored a game-high 10 goals to guide New Bridge La Dolfina to its 11th consecutive victory at International Polo Club, improving its record to 13-1 over the last two seasons.
In other Sunday games, Julio Arellano scored seven goals as Skeeterville edged Privilege/ Gracida International 12-11 and Audi topped 2006 Joe Barry Memorial Cup runner-up Lechuza Caracas 11-6.
Pony Express controlled the game early before New Bridge La Dolfina found its stride, scoring five of the next six goals to take a 10-7 halftime advantage. Both Cambiaso and Magrini said they didn’t do or say anything special in between chukkas. “(Pony Express’ Tomas) Goti got hurt a couple of times early in the game and we couldn’t get our rhythm,” said Magrini, a 9-goaler who seems fully recovered from a broken leg suffered last April. “It was a weird game. There’s a lot of difference in the goals on the scoreboard, but it didn’t feel that way on the field.”
“We didn’t do much different,” said Cambiaso, who was named the game’s MVP. “(The game) stopped many times and we couldn’t get going. We were a bit unlucky with (scoring) goals (in the first two chukkas). We were strong in the second half. The horses played very well.”
Tomas Goti led Pony Express with six goals. His injuries were not serious and he is not expected to miss any playing time. “We’re not as well-mounted … they out-horsed us,” said 8-goaler Nicolas Roldan of Pony Express who scored one goal, as did Gonzalo Von Wernich. “It was a tough game, it just wasn’t our day.”
Magrini finished with six goals while patron Russ McCall and Martin Valent did not score. “Once he (Cambiaso) started grabbing the ball, he’s fantastic,” said Magrini. “It’s great to play with him. It’s not complicated. It’s very very - you just go along with him.”
In the first game, Skeeterville led by two goals most of the game before holding on for victory. Privilege/Gracida International battled back in the fifth chukka to come within one, 10-9. Privilege/Gracida International tied the game at 10-10 with 5:01 left in the sixth chukka on Carlos Gracida’s nearside goal with Owen Rinehart on his hip. Skeeterville retaliated with a pair of goals by Arellano in a 40-second span to take a 12-10 lead with 3:30 left. Then Gracida cut the margin to 12-11 with 33 seconds remaining and Privilege/Gracida International missed an opportunity to tie the game when Roberto Gonzales missed a short forehand as time expired. Privilege/Gracida International featured four members of the famous Gracida family – nine-time U.S. Open champion Carlos and his 16-year-old son Carlitos, Carlos’ nephew Julio and their cousin Gonzales.
“It’s good to get the first game out of the way and win,” said Arellano. Patron Skeeter Johnston added three goals and Rinehart had two goals for Skeeterville. Carlos Gracida led the way with five goals while Gonzales scored three and Julio Gracida added two goals.
Nine-goaler Gonzalito Pieres and 7-goaler Fred Mannix Jr. scored five goals each to lead Audi, which scored five unanswered goals in the third chukka to take a 6-4 lead. Pite Merlos led Lechuza Caracas with four goals and Santiago Allaria added two goals.

The 5th Kurland International Polo Test Match - South Africa v England - postponed due to bad weather …

Players representing South Africa and England at this exciting and hotly contested event were:
South Africa :
1. Selby Williamson (5)
2. Buster Mackenzie (6) (Captain)
3. Ignus du Plessis (4)
4. Gareth Evans (6) (Bk)
Total : 21
England :
1. Malcolm Borwick (6) (Captain)
2. Nacho Gonzalez (6)
3. Roddy Williams (6)
4. Nina Vestey Clarkin (3)
Total : 21
Despite waking up to the most glorious sunny morning on the day of the test match, the weather changed rapidly as a cold-front swept through the Eastern Cape, bringing torrential rains in it’s wake.
By mid-day sponsors had to make a decision whether or not to continue with the match and it was unanimously agreed that, for the safety of the players and horses, the match would have to be postponed.
Sponsored by BMW and UBS, as well as Avis, Kurland Hotel, Moet & Chandon, Skyy Vodka and Bang and Olufsen, the event is one of social highlights of the Plett season and the most important game on the local polo calendar – thus regardless of the postponement, various functions continued, namely the AVIS lunch to host all of the media and their celebrity guests, as well as the Skyy Vodka after-party, which continued until the early hours of the morning. Celebrity guests seen at the Polo included P.J. Powers, Brumilda van Rensburg, Rosie Motene, Lady Victoria Spencer (Aiken) and Claudia Henkel amidst others.
Happily the weather cleared overnight, enough to enable the teams to take to the field before England had to fly out of S.A. and on the 30th December the fifth Kurland International was finally played on the Baron Field at the magnificent Kurland Estate. Avid supporters of the Sport of Kings accompanied by picnic baskets and magnums of champagne turned up to support their team.
The match saw South Africa do battle with England in a formidable match of mallets. South Africa were keen to pitch battle against the strong England Team – to avenge their three previous losses ! The English team went down to South Africa (10 / 7) in a thrilling and closely contested match during which the South African team players - Selby Williamson, Buster MacKenzie (Captain), Ignatius du Plessis and Gareth Evans - demonstrated why they were chosen to represent the home team.
Ignatius du Plessis was judged the most valuable player and Buster MacKenzie scored the most goals of the match – namely 5 of the 10. Kurland Park saddled the best playing pony.
Kurland is regarded as the polo mecca of Africa and, says Kurland owner Clifford Elphick, “Our players and horses now have international status and the Kurland International is heading towards being rated one of the top test matches in the world.”
“Plett features prominently in all the international polo magazines,” says entrepreneur Clifford Elphick, who is the owner of Kurland and the mastermind behind the establishment of the Plett region as a polo mecca in Africa. “It’s regarded as the best kept secret of the polo world – a place with world-class facilities, 18 km of beautiful beaches and a great climate. Equally important, it’s a place where players’ families can enjoy themselves as well.”
Says Elphick, “Our aim is to host an annual series of polo tournaments – culminating in the polo international test – to give visitors to the Garden Route an experience of this exciting sport.”
Kurland is set in a 700 hectare estate just outside Plettenberg Bay on the Western Cape’s garden route. There are 4 boarded polo fields, a 50m x 100m Arena, fully equipped stables and veterinary clinic, a 1 km sand exercise track and paddocks for 300 horses.

Jan 10th ‘07: Recap On Fabulous Polo Club in Coasta Careyes Mexico

The Polo Report by Steve Crowder - Royal times in paradise again. Over the holidays just past, Dina Stuart decided to take her winning Governor’s Cup team to the Magic Kingdom and that’s not in Anaheim. This Polo Magic Kingdom is in Costa Careyes, Mexico.

Carnation Farms (Dina Stuart’s Team) was a 6- goal team in March. With the recent handicap changes her 6-goal team is now an 8-goal team. They had such a good time in Costa Careyes they thought they were 10-goals! “We had the the best time there.” said the Palomino (Jason Crowder). Joseph Stuart (Jofie) and Juan Ho (Juan Jose Gonzalez) said “it was awesome .”

Carnation Farms played polo and made it to the finals. They beat old San Francisco rival JP Theriot. They lost to a smoking Aguilar powered machine, but nobody even cared. They were having so much fun and they were on vacation! If you do not believe me and want to meet the World down south which is only 2 hrs. away go there. There were players Mexico, Peru, Argrntina, Germany, England, Portugal, Italy, England and of course the USA. If you like to play polo, party, sunbath, swim, fish, play golf, or tennis then Costa Careyes is the place to go.

There is another great tournament in 2 weeks at Coasta Careyes. Let us know if you want to get out of the cold and try a trip to the Polo Kingdom in Mexico. You might even come home with some cash. I saw in the paper today on Alaska airlines RT for $280 bucks. So be free and see the world of this fabulous polo wonderland and play POLO. Look it up on www.careyes.com and book it.

Jan 14th ‘07: Ice Walking In The Desert.

The Polo Report by Steve Crowder. It was not really that much fun here this past weekend. It was so cold on the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego. It was ice cold and for sure it was time to be in the Magic Kingdom of Costa Careyes Mexico where it was 85 F with a low of 72. Here in the desert it was like 50 and 15. I am exagerating a little on the 15 end, but it was very, very, COLD. Without a coat you were frozen solid, but Polo must go on and it did.

Today we started at 9:45 AM. It was Smokin’ Joe Henderson returns to the desert and he did burn Dudley’s house as Casa Blanca found he is back in town. He is playing with a young gun named Julian Mannix “Mini Mac.” He was an all out attack mode at all times. Julian wears a red helmet as he should as he is on fire and looking to team up with Little Mac (brother Frederick Mannix) soon. They are now 3 and 1 and looking for a showdown this Saturday as they meet the super B’s (Bilo Zarif and Bolko Kissling). The B’s are teamed up with the Palomino (Jason Crowder) and the Aussie Midget (Dirk Gould). They will be at war at the downtown cafe Phoneix. Friendly Chevy had a gunfight as two Patrons Lance Hughes and Gary Haydon fired away at the flagman often and they waved it up. Buttercup (Geri Dardi) and McPolo ran into a smokin’ Ed Pope and a charging Aspen Oaks and they loved the cold weather and butter just dies as it cannot run in this environment. Aspen Oaks goes to 3 and 1 or 2 and 2 (I am not 100% on this one). Empire Polo and Big Al continue to smoke the others as they rolled over Kentfield and JV ranch with Danny Brown showing the way. It was a hard-hitting Super B’s and a flying palomino out doing Augi (Agustin Zavaleta) and his La Mancha crew. Even with 6 players they fell behind as the “Thunder from Down Under” (Dirk Gould) kept up the case of heading to the final 4. Fish Creek 2 returned to the winners circle as they made it by True Choice. It was Joe Anthony (Rancho Amistad) with a major attack with the Wolfman (Ashton Wolf) and Alvaro being 4 and 0 headed to the final 4. It is the 10th anniversary at Rancho Amistad and Joe also has a very good Polo Club there. The “V” man (Vladimir Rivkin) with the Double Eagles returned to the winners circle and did away with JHHE on their way. He is amazing to see for a beginner. A big surprise or maybe a shock . . . it was Carnation Farms losing to Zippy as in Mr. Zeiring as he let them know he is still in town. In the 12-goal finals it was Dandy Dan Horn and his Palm Desert squad blowing out the boys from Storm Cat. Dan is back in a big way and he takes the first title of the year. Palm Desert is the first Champion in 2007 El Dorado-style. See ya this Friday.

La Dolfina has reached the summit once again

In a great final match that was defined 5:27 minutes into the supplementary chukker, with a golden goal scored by Bartolomé Castagnola, La Dolfina became the champion of the Argentine Open when they beat La Aguada 14 - 13.
Cambiaso, who beat his own 500-goal record and, in fact, beat Bautista Heguy’s record, was the best player of the finals and won every single prize.
La Dolfina had already defeated La Aguada in a tight final match at Hurlingham, but this one was a lot tougher, far more keenly-contested and was lived with much more agitation.
Both teams fought until the last minute, but the cup was kept in the hands of La Dolfina, the twice Argentine champion (Indios Chapaleufú II was the last team to achieve this victory in 1999-2000).
In the first chukkers, the Novillo Astradas took the initiative. They began winning the match and based on their under-pressure marking technique, mostly focused on Cambiaso, they kept everything under control.
Until that moment, “the best defense” was more effective than “the best attack”. Until then, La Aguada was far more solid and they were doing everything right.
It was incredible how the players from Open Door blocked La Dolfina’s way towards the goal during these first three periods. This, with the exception of the penalty-shot way, which was the only way they could make a difference and there is where Cambiaso never failed.
In the fourth period, always through penalty shots, Cambiaso scored on three occasions and ended up by tying the game at 6 - 6. In spite of this, La Dolfina was finding it very difficult to reach the goal through their plays, and each time they scored La Aguada would get ahead of them immediately after.
The story only changed in the sixth chukker: la Dolfina managed to be on top of the scoreboard for the first time.
With a crushing start, 2.30 minutes into this chukker they had already scored 4 goals and they were now leading the scoreboard. With their third victory in this period, Cambiaso reached 500 goals in the history of the Open Championship (in point of fact, he reached 503 goals and beat Bautista Heguy’s record of 501goals).
La Dolfina’s number 1 player (today, the highest goal-scorer in the history of Palermo), feeling freer and more willing to run, started to be the star player everybody was wanting to match and began performing incredible plays (really incredible!!!).
The seventh chukker was played at a high level. It was very even. Miguel Novillo Astrada tied the match at 10 – 10. Cambiaso scored another penalty shot and Javier tied the match again…, in this way, they kept tying the match consecutively.
In the eighth chukker, a feeling of nervousness grew by the minute inside and outside the field.
Immediately after missing a 60-yard penalty shot, Nacho Novillo Astrada scored a goal through a penalty corner. But this joy did not last long because, once again, in an excellent run that started before the halfway line of the field, Cambiaso began zigzagging to avoid his opponents and tied the match at 13 - 13.
So, supplementary chukker it was…
La Dolfina started playing better in the overtime, in spite of the fact that Aiken Cura, Cambiaso’s best stallion broke a leg, which caused Adolfito deep pain and uncertainty.
With his eyes blinded by tears, La Dolfina’s number 1 player returned to the game with all his might after this interruption, being the only one who had the ball, whilst his team-mates cleared the way.
The match could have been won by either team. La Dolfina misses first, then La Aguada missed in two subsequent plays, which came close to one of the goal posts and, finally, Lolo Castagnola appeared after a brilliant approach performed by Cambiaso crowding this opponents together, to score the goal that defined the match; his first goal, but the most important of all for his team, which he scored 5:27 minutes into this chukker.
La Dolfina has reached the world polo summit once again. The Novillos narrowly missed winning the most important title of all as they lost their third consecutive final match.
Anyway, the Novillo Astradas played an excellent match and had a great season, which year after year continues to reaffirm their true team play.
For the champion’s part, Mariano Aguerre, Lucas Monteverde and Bartolomé Castagnola, who in spite of only having scored one goal each, contributed greatly towards their success, complying with every single requirements, above all the offensive plays during the second half of this match.

Jan 8th ‘07: Joe Barry Memorial 2007 Schedule and Teams IPC (FL)

Superstar Adolfo Cambiaso Leads New Bridge La Dolfina Against Pony Express to Highlight Opening Da y at International Polo Club on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.

WELLINGTON, FL (January 7, 2007) – Superstar Adolfo Cambiaso, the Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods of polo, leads pre-tournament favorite New Bridge La Dolfina against Pony Express in the first featured match of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup Sunday at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Cambiaso, in 1993 at the age of 17, became the youngest 10-goaler (the sport’s maximum rating) in the history of the sport. The five-time U.S. Open champion turns 32 on April 14 and is scheduled to play the entire season for the first time in the history of the club.

The tournament schedule was released Sunday.

New Bridge La Dolfina went 12-1 and won two of the three tournaments they played in during the 2006 season at International Polo Club. Cambiaso did not play in the season’s final two tournaments last year as he had previously committed to returning to Argentina. Cambiaso is joined by 9-goaler Matias Magrini and 3-goaler Martin Valent of Argentina and patron Russ McCall of Atlanta and Aiken. Valent replaces Sunny Hale from last year’s fearsome lineup.

Pony Express is led by 8-goaler Nicolas Roldan, who grew up in Wellington. Roldan is expected to be the team’s leading scorer. He is joined by 7-goaler Gonzalo Von Wernich and 6-goaler Tomas Goti, both of Argentina and patron Bob Daniels. Pony Express is expected to double-team Cambiaso most of the game to try and force him to give up the ball.

The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased in advance and they are also available at the gate on the day of the game.

International Polo Club Palm Beach is located at 3667 120th Avenue South, between Pierson Road and Lake Worth Road in Wellington. For information, directions or ticket purchases, please call the club at (561) 204-5687 or visit the website at www.internationalpoloclub.com.
